relentless in sending masses of clouds agitated by disturbing thunderbolts, was deflated in pride by your valorous act of lifting the mountain.

O Govinda! You give bliss to Yasoda and other mothers with moon-like faces in Nanda’s house by your qualities like defeating demons, in response to affection for your parents. We offer respects to you today. By your body you deride the beauty of a bee (indindira) enjoying in the watchtower made of blue lotus petals. Your beauty derides that of a bee which has turned even blacker from drinking honey of a blue lotus. The beauty defeats the luster of collyrium. By you, Indra (jambha-vain) was made devoid of pride (nistambhah) by your valorous act of holding up the mountain.

Indra is described. He performed acts, unstoppable by others (gambhira), of inciting clouds agitated (uttarala) with appearance (jrmbha) of lightning which moved about because of being thrown with great strength (ksubhyat). Thus, lifting of Govardhana has been explained.

1 offer respects to the king of the cowherds.

May Murari, who gave joy to the young girls bathing in the Yamuna, who showed most affection to the gopi Dhanya among them, remove other desires.

Lilantara-varnanam 567

Wanting to describe stealing of the clothing, the author prays for his desired goal from Krsna, performer of the pastime.

Please remove desires other than desires for you. You give joy to the young gopis bathing in the flow of the Yamuna (vanyasrita). You give joy to them in a righteous way (sa-nyayam). What was unlawful, having them show their limbs by stealing the clothing, when they desired Krsna as their lover, became proper (sa-nyayam). He offered friendship to Dhanya. He was most affectionate to her.

Seeing the young gopis who were performing a vrata in the winter month, who were very skillful at praising Katyayani, who were eager to bathe in the water, taking their clothes off and putting them on the bank, desiring Krsna as their husband, acting childish in the water, you, fun-loving, attractive as Cupid, developing desire for them, approached them and stole their garments.

O killer of Kesi! May you manifest your excellence (jaya)\ With generous heart (pra-mana-comes later in the verse), manifesting great affection for your devotees, play (vihara)! O Lord! O red lipped Krsna! Be (kalayeh) merciful to me, wicked in heart, (last line of poem). Fun-loving (kutuki), seeing the cowherd girls, approaching them, you stole their clothing (sicayan). They are described. They had made a vow in Margasirsa month (sahasi). Saha means Margasirsa month according to Amara-kosa. They were skillful (krtinih) at praising Parvati. They were eager to bath in the water. The next two items are clear. They were greedy to have Krsna as their husband (rasa-lamapatikah). They

were fickle when playing in the water (sphuta-balya). Krsna is described. You were desirous of them (matim ullalayan). You were beautiful like Cupid (manobhava-vat).

In the middle of young boys, quickly you climbed a kadamba tree in a grove on the bank, and, showering the girls with mercy, embarrassed them, and, with their clean cloths on your broad shoulder, joyful with a beautiful smile, you said, “O girls! Hear my beneficial words which will relieve your fatigue. Come near me either together or one by one, manifesting your beauty, and take your clothing.”

You were in the middle (antaragah) of a group of small children for four or five years, who were devoted to you (suhrdam). Quickly you climbed by your desire (svarasat) a kadamba (priyakam) tree in a forest on the Yamuna’s bank. You bathed the girls in mercy and embarrassed them. You placed all their clean (dhauta) clothing on your broad shoulder. You blossomed with beautiful smiles. You spoke to them. O girls (pramada)! Listen (srnuta) to my beneficial (hitam) words which will relieve you of fatigue(asramadant)! Come near (abhitah) me one by one (kramatah) or together (yadi va sahitd). In a charming manner (vibramatah) take your clothing.

charming girls, shining with fame, endowed with moon-like minds! My friends know this. I do not say this boldly as a joke. You are fatigued from the vow, having bathed.” Saying this, he showed his skill to his friends. “O most fickle boy! Do not argue with us!”

I am not a cheater since I have not told a lie (anrtam) from the time of my birth (janusah). O girls with charming limbs (lalita), shining with fame! My friends know this.

1 will not say this as a joke (hasat) rashly (sahasa). Oh! You are tired from the vow. In this way he spoke, showing his cleverness (patutam) to his friends. The girls then spoke. O most fickle boy! Do not enter an argument.

If you do not agree, we will immediately tell the powerful king of your character. O cheater! O boy infatuated with pride!” He heard their rough words brimming with anger, as they stood in the cold water of the Yamuna, shivering intensely, with shining bodies. They wept in anger, while their attractive eyes glanced about.

Immediately offer us our clothing. Do not be deceptive. We, who give milk (rasadah) to you, obey your words always. Rasadah also means giving amorous pleasure. We are your servants and do not belong to anyone else. If you do not respect our words, we will inform the strong king Kamsa of your cheating character. O cheater! O child intoxicated with pride! He heard their words revealing their fear, filled with rough words indicating anger, as they wept in anger, while their shining bodies shivered in the cold water of the Yamuna.

More than ever he showed his constant moon-like smile. “O women! If you really favor my sweet, true words, approach me and in great joy take your clothing and ornaments which have fallen from the kadamba tree. Give up reserve in your hearts. It is inappropriate. If you do not agree to my words, then I will not give you your clothing. What can the king filled with great anger do to me, endowed with great valor?” Saying these spotless words, he twirled a lotus and smiled like the moon, overjoyed at the sight.

He manifested a constant moon-like smile more than previously. He was overjoyed because he was their friend (pranaya). He spoke (nigadan) pure words which were clear. O women! If you are receptive to my sweet words which are true, come near. With great joy (pramadat) take your clothing and ornaments which have fallen from the kadamba tree. Give up reserve in your heart, which is not proper. If you do not respect my word, saying,

“How can we approach you without clothing?” Then I will not give you the clothing at all. If you do not obey me and show the king’s power, it is useless. What can the king filled with anger do to me, since I have great prowess (uruvirya-caye). His servants have all been killed. Thus, he will also be killed. Twirling a lotus, he appeared like the moon. He was fearless. Seeing them, he was joyful (muditah).

With their clothing in your hands you looked at the girls and shook your head. “O women! You have committed offense to Varuna by bathing naked out of intense desire, ignoring scriptures. To remove the sin, you must place your red hands, beautiful with quivering luster, upon your heads and quickly come to me.” You were offered respects by the girls, each with folded hands, who gazed upon you after attaining passion with bewilderment by hearing your sweet words. You were attractive, having fulfilled your desire.

He was offered (pranatah) respects by the girls. He was attractive (madhurah). They are described. They gazed upon him (nayanam kiratlbhih), having developed passion which produced bewilderment in their hearts by the sweetness of his words. They each folded their hands. This means they offered respects to their dear Lord. O women (van i tab)! Because of bathing naked

out of uncontrolled desire, which is forbidden in scriptures (krta-varjanatah), you have offended Varuna, lord of the water. Placing the phrases out of order is not a fault since it is required for alliteration. To destroy the sin of offending Varuna (durita- ksataye), quickly approach me, the form of auspiciousness, with your red hands, beautiful with shining luster on your heads. His desire was fulfilled (krta-kama-dhurah).

Attracted to their budding affection, you gave the auspicious clothing to the girls with bowed heads. You promised to fulfil desire of the girls who were oveijoyed, thirsty for love, humbled by shyness on meeting their lover, tinged with fresh beauty, effulgent, slightly smiling, hiding themselves in front of him, collecting their clothing and belts, shivering intensely, fingers trembling. You were the best of the affectionate.

You gave the auspicious cloth to the girls, their heads bowed. You developed attraction for them, because of their manifesting affection. You granted the desire (vihitesta-varah) of the cowherd girls (pramada-prakare).

Go now, girls, and return to Vraja. Your desire is fulfilled, for in my company you will enjoy the coming nights. (SB 10.22.27)

He promised to give what they desired. The girls are described. Ten phrases describe them. They are clear in meaning. He was the chief of the affectionate (pranaya-pravarah).

You were surrounded by happy friends. You increased the longing (utkalika) of the women by the fresh sweet sounds of your flute which manifested a variety of exercises. You gave pleasure (ramayan) to their minds. You produced madness in them (unmadanah). By your mercy you sent them home. You became joyful by these pastimes (kalita-pramadah). You wore fresh ornaments of flower clusters (kusuma-stavaka) in your ears. You were the shelter of all beings in the universe. Kusuma- stavaka is the name of the dandaka.
