I worship you, wearing makara earrings and fine ornaments, whose face of intense beauty derides the moon, who, lifting heavy Govardhana in joy, completely destroyed Indra, full of great pride.

The story of lifting Govardhana which will be described is summarized.

I worship you, wearing makara earrings. The intense beauty of your face derides the sweetness of the moon (acandakara). You wear excellent ornaments like armbands and bracelets. Joyfully (rabhasena) lifting heavy (prthu) Govardhana you completely (alam) destroyed Indra (akhandalam), full of strong pride (amanda-mada-mandalaih).

May this fickle minded bee remain facing you, who destroyed Indra’s sacrifice by harsh words using logic, who increased

the worship of brahmanas, cows and Govardhana, who explained the reason for increasing wealth by worshipping the mountain, who had the people make various sweets and many incomparable soups.

The story is told in detail, (last line) O Madhava! This also means spring. O supreme person! May the fickle minded bee (sillmukhl) remain facing you. Destroy aversion to you, as you destroyed Indra. Siltmukha is a bee according to Halayudha. Krsna is described. You destroyed Indra’s sacrifice by many strong words arising from logic.

“It is seen that sacrifices like kariri, putresti, and jyotistoma give results by positive and negative logic. The devata is an ahga of karma like ghee. Without karma, the devata does not give results, (negative) Prakrti, induced by the actions of a living being, produces clouds as a result by movement of rajas, and showers rain. (Positive) The nature of the moon is to shower water from the cloud, just as it showers snow. What is the use of Indra in all this?” To speak using dry logic is called hetuvada.

Using others ideas, Krsna made them disrespect Indra. That was his desire. He made them worship the brahmanas, etc., as Vedic worship. He exalted the worship of cows, and many (utkara) brahmanas (bhusura) and Govardhana, the best of devotees. He informed them of the reason for gaining wealth by worship of Govardhana.

tasmad gavam brahmananam adres carabhyatam makhah ya indra-yaga-sambharas tair ayam sadhyatam makhah

Therefore may a sacrifice for the pleasure of the cows, the brahmanas and Govardhana Hill begin! With all the paraphernalia collected for worshiping Indra, let this sacrifice be performed instead. (SB 10.24.25)

Chando’stadasakam 479

huyantam agnayah samyag brahmanair brahma-vadibhih annam bahu-gunarii tebhyo deyarii vo dhenu-daksinah

The brahmanas who are learned in the Vedic mantras must properly invoke the sacrificial fires. Then you should feed the priests with nicely prepared food and reward them with cows and other gifts. (SB 10.24.27)

The mountain nourishes the cows with grass and water. We maintain our lives by the cows. He had them make sweets and soups for the worship of the brahmanas. The list of preparations also include rice, etc.

He had them decorate the cows with flowers, sandalwood, red power (vandana) and minerals. He had all the cowherds clean the caves and plateaus of the mountain. He made all his relatives become attached to the festival of the mountain while shouting. He had them quickly perform the worship and circumambulate the hill.

May the fickle minded bee remain facing you, who took the form of a mountain and ate the resplendent food, who gave joy to all the excellent cowherds shining like auspicious mines, who was surrounded by Gokula which suffered the deluge from angry Indra’s rain, who performed astonishing acts to give happiness to all your relatives afflicted by fear of Indra.

Taking the form of the mountain he ate the resplendent food (odane). it is said:

krsnas tv anyatamam rupam gopa-visrambhanam gatah sailo ’smiti bruvan bhuri balim adad brhad-vapuh

Krsna then assumed an unprecedented, huge form to instill faith in the cowherd men. Declaring, “I am Govardhana Mountain!” he ate the abundant offerings. (SB 10.24.35)

You gave joy to the excellent cowherds who shone like auspicious mines.

You were surrounded by Gokula which suffered from the deluge caused by showers produced by angry Indra. You performed astonishing actions to give happiness to the group of friends disturbed by fear of Indra.

May the fickle minded bee remain facing you, who lifted the incomparable mountain in your left hand, who destroyed the pride of arrogant Indra by a sprout of your pastimes, who had your friends dwell in a hole in the mountain, who made your relatives drown in an ocean of astonishment.

Chando’stadasakam 481

His actions are described. You lifted the incomparable mountain by your left lotus hand. You destroyed the pride of arrogant (uddhura) Indra (jambha-mardana) by a sprout of your pastimes. You had your friends afflicted by rain (ambhara) live in the wide hole in the mountain. You made all your relatives sink in an ocean of astonishment.

May the fickle minded bee remain facing you, whose shining face was seen by rejoicing friends, who responded to the attracted gopis with a soft moon-like smile, who was caressed by the hand of Yasoda who was astonishing, joyful and fearful, who was seen by Radha with her attractive, restless eyes.

Your shining face was seen by all your friends who rejoiced when free of fear of the rain. You acknowledged the attracted gopis by a soft moon-like smile. You were caressed by the hands of your mother who was astonished by your act, joyful on seeing your face and fearful of the mountain above. “How can this child, soft as butter, lift the mountain?” This was her astonishment.

You were gazed upon by Radha with her attractive restless eyes. Her crooked gaze indicated, “In this crowd Krsna looks at me and holds up the mountain. 1 will smile at him sweetly. By that may he be nourished to lift the mountain.” By that, both parties would be showered with rasa.

May the fickle minded bee remain facing you, who stopped the thunderbolts coming from masses of fierce clouds agitated by wind, who crushed the great pride of Indra, blinded by wealth, who kept the mountain sleeping in the bed of your hand for seven days, who by your glance cleared the clouds produced by Indra who gave up his pride.

You thwarted the thunderbolts released by Indra with fierce clouds agitated by wind. You were the cause of crushing the pride of Indra, blinded by wealth. How long did you hold up the mountain? For seven days you kept the mountain sleeping in the bed of your hand. By your glance you stopped the clouds furnished by Indra, who had been humbled (nirmadikrta). The howling wind stopped, and the sky became clear. The wind blew gently with fragrance. It would be good to leave the hole in the mountain.

May the fickle minded bee remain facing you, who with charming words had your relatives leave the hole, whose auspicious heroism was praised by all your friends overcome with joy, who placed the mountain in its previous place, shining with trees, who had firmly vowed to protect your Vraja relatives always.

Using charming words, you made all your relatives leave the hole. Your auspicious prowess was praised by all your friends who were intensely joyous. You placed the incomparable mountain in its place shining with trees. Why did you agree to do such great acts? You had made a firm vow to protect your Vraja friends always. Krsna himself says:

Chando’stadasakam 483

tasman mac-charanam gostham man-natham mat-parigraham gopaye svatma-yogena so ’yam me vrata ahitah

I must therefore protect the cowherd community by my transcendental potency, for I am their shelter, I am their master, and indeed they are my own family. After all, I have taken a vow to protect my devotees. (SB 10.25.18)

May the fickle minded bee remain facing you, who became joyful on seeing the fresh joy of your parents with hairs standing on end, who were offered protection by the women who held kunkuma, rice, and leaves in their hands, who was enthroned by Indra on an excellently draped throne on a plateau of Govardhana, which eclipsed the sun, and who inspired Indra to bow to the dust of your lotus feet with fear and shame.

You became joyful on seeing the fresh joy of your parents (ballava-nathayoh) whose hairs stood on end (phulla) because of joy at the heroic act of their son. “1 am happy having served my parents.” The women offered you protection, chanting svasti-vacana, etc., their hands full of (aksata) kunkuma, rice, leaves, and mango buds. Indra then came to victorious Krsna to surrender.

You were seated by Indra on a throne on a plateau of the high mountain, which covered the sun. Sdnu means an excellent cloth covered platform according to Amara-kosa. Indra established you on a jeweled throne beautiful with soft back pillow, spread with colorful silk cloth. The dust from your lotus feet was worshipped

by Indra who was frightened and ashamed. “The Supreme Lord will be angry with me because of my great offense.” That was his fear. “Since I am his servant, this action was not proper for me.” That was his shame. Indra offered respects, saying “O Lord! Forgive my offense since I am your ignorant servant.”

You smiled. “You have understood that I am the Supreme Lord.” Facing Indra, he said, “My desire has been fulfilled by your committing offense.” By his smiling face he dispelled Indra’s (vasava) fear (bhi-bhrame). You were charming with skillful words full of syllables attractive to Indra.

Indra, you may now go. Execute my order and remain in your appointed position as King of heaven. But be sober, without false pride. (SB 10.27.17)

He pacified Indra, who had been frightened and ashamed, with his affectionate words. You were very pleased, attaining the position of Indra (indrata-padam) who gives auspiciousness to the cows (go-siva-pradam)
