What austerities must the gopis have performed! With their eyes they always drink the nectar of Lord Krsna’s form, which is the essence of loveliness and is not to be equaled or surpassed. Though I am not at all qualified to receive your mercy, give mercy, since you are the best of those endowed with a wealth of mercy.

Describing the couple equal in attractive form and qualities, the author prays to them. Though I have no qualification at all for receiving the mercy of you two (vam), you should be merciful. The reason is given. Those who are full of mercy, wealthy with mercy, are seen to be merciful to lame or deaf persons. What to speak of you two who are the chief (mauli) among all merciful people?

The most merciful are seen in this world to be most merciful even to unqualified and offensive people! O Radha and Krsna, worshipped by kings!

Those who are greatly merciful are seen in this world to be filled with mercy. O you two, who are worshipped by kings!

Karpanya-panjika-stotram 205

I do not have even a reflection of a particle of bhakti, the cause of your mercy, but be merciful to me since you are performers of great pastimes.

“Our mercy is given because of bhakti. But you are devoid of bhakti. How can we give mercy to you?”

I do not have a reflection of a particle (lesabhasah) of bhakti, the cause of your mercy. That is true, but, still, be merciful to me. The cause is given. You are the performers of great pastimes. The rain falls on both the friendly and the indifferent persons.

jane duste’py abhakte’pi prasidanto vilokitah I maha-lila-mahesas ca ha nathau bahavo bhuvi 111411

Many great controllers and persons with great pastimes are seen on this earth to be merciful to persons who are wicked and not devotees. O my two masters!

“The wealthy person or king, who is ignorant is merciful to the sinful and the offender, though they should be punished. But the intelligent Lord does not act in this way.”

The first part is clear. Many persons performing great pastimes and many great controllers are seen to be merciful. Siva was pleased with the kirata named Baija who offered a few drops of water. Siva gave him great benedictions and became famous by that name. A person entered a Siva temple to steal and lit a lamp to see the wealth. Pleased by that act, Siva gave him benedictions so that he became Kuvera. Siva pleased with the asuras, burned them by the fire of his anger, and bestowed on them Svarga. Great pastimes of the devatas on earth are seen. What to speak of you two the supreme devas?

Even though, being the lowest but considering myself to be the highest, and though ignorant, considering myself to be wise, this living being has committed an offense.

“The devatas quickly give mercy to you while not looking closely. But we two give mercy while looking for a little bhakti and do not give it indiscriminately. That is our nature. You do not have even a speck of bhakti.”

While admitting his offenses, speaking of his bhakti, he begs for mercy in two verses. This living being (ayam j ant uh), though low (adhamah), thinks himself (svam) supreme. Though he is ignorant, he thinks himself to be full of knowledge, and though he is wicked, he thinks himself to be righteous, even though he has committed this offense (mantum). Showing himself in an assembly of devotees to be the highest, when he is the lowest, etc., is a great offense.

Still you two (vam) should be merciful to this person (asmin). 0 two lord (adhlsau)! He describes himself. He sometimes chants your names (nama-jalpini). They are described. Their Namabhasa delivers a host of persons with bad qualities (avadya).

Hanta indicates lamentation according to Visva.

This living being (jlvah), weak (kllbah), which means devoid of strength of sadhana, has become bold because of intense pain of samsara. Constantly he prays to you two to attain relief from his suffering. O masters (nathau)! Kliba means unmanly and kastam
